Music! Words! Opera!
Summer Workshop
Summer Teacher Workshop 2008
June 30-July 3, 2008*
Create and Produce an Opera with your
Students
In this week-long summer workshop, Utah Opera’s
Paula Fowler and composer Roger Ames (from OPERA America) will:
• introduce you to the art form of opera,
using Mozart’s The Magic Flute to see how an opera is
put together,
• provide experience with theatre games and music composition,
• guide you in work with collaborative groups to write
a mini-opera as a teacher group,
• and help you make plans for an opera project during
the school year.
Teachers will receive a set of curriculum materials
to help them teach about opera, and to guide them lesson by lesson
through the process of creating and producing an opera. The materials
include lesson plans on and recorded excerpts from “The
Magic Flute” and several other operas appropriate for children.
The curriculum guides will be provided free of charge to each
teacher by Utah Opera.
The workshop is free. Various credit options
are available, including graduate university credit for a small
registration fee.
The workshop will take place in the Learning Center
at the Utah Opera Production Studios, 336 North 400 West, Salt
Lake City, Utah.
*Because this week is shortened due to
the July 4 holiday, we will need to also meet the Thursday, June
26, when we will enjoy watching together a recorded production
of The Magic Flute. Other arrangements can be made if June 26
is a problem for you.
