Utah Symphony
 |
The Utah Symphony is one of only 19 full-time, professional
orchestras in the United States, and is best recognized internationally
through its great recording legacy. From its early beginnings in
1940, with 5 concerts performed by 52 part-time musicians, the 83-member
orchestra now performs over 200 concerts each year.
Much of the ensemble’s early artistic growth occurred under
the direction of Maurice Abravanel, Music Director from 1947 to
1979. During this time, the Symphony made numerous recordings and
came to be very respected in the music community.
Keith Lockhart, Music Director of the Utah Symphony since 1998,
has led the orchestra in such exciting projects as the “Salute
to the Symphony” television special and a performance at the
2002 Olympic Opening Ceremonies for billions of people around the
world.
Assistant Conductor David In-Jae Cho joins the Utah Symphony this
season. He leads over 100 concerts per year, including programs
on the Masterworks, Chamber, Pops, Family, Lollipops, Special, and
Summer Series. O'Neil creates and conducts the orchestra's education
concerts.
Musicians in the Utah Symphony are highly trained, full-time professional
artists at the top of their craft. When holding auditions, the Symphony
hears from people all over the country. Hundreds of applications
may be received for a single opening!
