Blind & Visually Impaired
Night
May 7, 2008 for all age groups
Each year, 150 members of the blind and visually-impaired community
are invited to a special outreach event at the Wednesday evening
dress rehearsal of our May opera. At 6:00, Education Director, Paula
Fowler, will talk to the group about the opera, passes around prepared
fabric samples of costumes (with Braille labels), and shares information
about the set. Braille supertitles and large print programs are
available, as well as headsets through which a play-by-play description
of stage action is broadcast from our translator's booth.
This exciting event is offered free of charge to persons with visual
impairment, plus one driver. Reservations by May 4, 2008 are required.
Space is limited.
Opera Preview Lecture
There will be a pre-opera lecture on Mozart's Don
Giovanni held at the Salt Lake City Library, Wednesday, May 7 at
7:30 pm with Paul Dorgan.
Opera-tunities at the Opera
Junior and senior high school students with their
teachers are invited at a minimal charge to attend final dress rehearsals
of main stage productions on the Thursday before Opening Night in
Salt Lake City's Capitol Theatre with events running from 7-10 p.m.
Sword fighting, murder, seduction, vengeance, unrequited
love, a wedding –and that’s just in the first act of
Mozart's Don Giovanni. The legend of Don Juan comes to life in Mozart’s
operatic masterpiece that ends with a twist that could make any
rogue change his ways.
May 8, 2008, 7 pm at the Capitol
Theatre.
Sung in Italian with English Supertitles
Robert Tweten, conductor
Nicolette Molnár, director

All-Star Evening
May 13 (Tuesday), 7 pm
A youth soloist selected from those who auditioned
for Salute to Youth will perform a full-length concerto with the
Utah Symphony. You’ll also be dazzled by the large-scale orchestral
works performed by the Utah Symphony side-by-side with our Youth
Symphony All-Stars, young players selected from the state’s
elite youth orchestras.
Concert for Children with
Autism
and Their Families
May 15, 2008, 7 pm
Utah Symphony & Opera offers
an annual concert for children with autism, and their families.
We present this concert because we know that many families cannot
attend cultural events together because their autistic child (children)
acts in distracting ways. We feature our Opera Apprentice Artists
with the Utah Symphony on the Capitol Theatre Stage in a special
concert where everyone understands the difficulty of keeping these
children quiet in their seats.
This year's Concert will be
on May 15, 2008 with a light dinner at 6 pm and
the concert at 7 pm.

A Toast to Vienna
Festival
Every season Utah Opera & Utah Symphony present a festival
that bridges all forms of artistic expression, providing an opportunity
to expand and explore how each defines the human experience. This
season our theme, A Toast to Vienna, is centered on Utah
Opera’s production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro,
Utah Symphony’s An Evening in Vienna on March 6-7,
and the Viennese Waltzes in our March 20-21 Pops concerts.
We’re collaborating with local museums, art galleries, libraries,
film centers, performing arts groups, and scholars to explore the
lively world of Vienna. This is one festival you won’t want
to miss. Visit us in the Fall for more details.
